Packing is where most moves are won or lost. Pack well and your move will be faster, cheaper, and stress-free. Pack poorly and you'll be unwrapping broken items, hunting for missing pieces, and paying extra hours of removalist time. Here's how to do it right.

Start Early and Work Room by Room

Start packing 3–4 weeks before your move for a typical Perth home. Begin with rooms and items you use least — spare bedrooms, books, artwork, seasonal clothing. Leave the kitchen, bathroom, and daily essentials until last. Working room by room keeps things organised and makes unpacking much easier.

Label Every Box

Write the destination room and a brief contents summary on the top AND side of every box. Your removalists will stack boxes, so side labelling is essential. Use different coloured tape or markers for different rooms if you want an even faster system.

Protect Your Fragile Items

Use proper bubble wrap or packing paper for fragile items — newspaper works but can leave ink marks. Fill empty space in boxes with crumpled paper or clothing to prevent items shifting. Pack heavy items (books, tools) in small boxes. Plates should be packed vertically, not flat — they're stronger on their edge. Mark fragile boxes clearly on all sides.

The Essentials Box

Pack a separate box (or bag) of items you'll need on the first night: phone chargers, toiletries, toilet paper, a change of clothes, kettle and coffee, important documents, medications, and children's or pet essentials. Keep this with you, not on the truck.

Disassemble Large Furniture Early

Flat-pack what you can — bed frames, bookshelves, wardrobes — and keep all screws and bolts in labelled zip-lock bags taped to the relevant piece. This speeds up loading significantly and reduces the risk of damage.
