Perth gets more sunshine than almost any other capital city in Australia — making it one of the best places in the world for rooftop solar. If you're considering solar for your Perth home or business, here's what you need to know about the electrical side of the installation.

What Does an Electrician Do in a Solar Install?

Solar panel installations require both an accredited solar installer (for the panels and mounting) and a licensed electrician (for the electrical connection). In many cases these are the same person or company. The electrician connects the inverter to your switchboard, installs a bi-directional meter (for feed-in tariffs), and ensures your system complies with Western Power's requirements.

Clean Energy Council Accreditation

For any solar installation, your electrician should hold Clean Energy Council (CEC) accreditation as a solar installer. This is required to access government rebates (STCs) and to connect to the Western Power grid. Always ask for their CEC accreditation number before signing any contract.

Western Power Grid Connection

Connecting solar to the grid in WA requires an approved application to Western Power. Your solar installer typically handles this, but it's your responsibility to ensure it happens. Without grid approval, you can't legally export electricity or receive feed-in tariff payments.

Switchboard Upgrades for Solar

Older Perth homes may need a switchboard upgrade before solar can be connected safely. A licensed electrician will assess your existing switchboard and advise whether an upgrade is needed. Budget an extra $800–$2,500 if your switchboard is more than 20 years old.
