A good handyman is invaluable for the long list of small jobs around a Perth home — but there are legal limits on what they can do. Knowing them protects you, your insurance and the handyman.

Licensed Trades Are Off Limits

In WA, electrical, plumbing and gas work must be done by a licensed tradesperson — a handyman cannot legally do them, no matter how minor. That includes things like adding a power point or moving a tap.

The Value Limit

Unregistered handymen can generally only carry out building work under a set dollar threshold. Larger building jobs require a registered building contractor and, often, council approval.

What a Handyman Can Do

• Minor carpentry, door adjustments and draught sealing
• Painting touch-ups, gutter cleaning and general maintenance
